Features Description |
Saccharum officinarum is a herbaceous, perennial plant, which grows in clumps consisting of a number of reeds. The plant can reach from 3 to 6m in Ï„height. The reeds are divided from a succession of very short joints and each joint has a bud. The thin, white-yellow or deep green, rarely red-purple stem forms a lot of small flowers and long, sword-shaped leaves. |

It is adminstered in the form of herbal tea (a quantity of dried herb in a cup of boiling water for 5-10min, 3 times a day). It is applied externally to the skin as soothing, healing and anti-inflammatory in the form of poultice. The plant juice is recommended for its nutritional value. The whole plant has healing, soothing, anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. The herbal tea is used in folk medicine mainly in southern Asia for the treatment of constipation, cough, urinary tract infections, jaundice, hypertension, bronchitis, heart disease and anemia. It is applied externally to the skin against skin infections and wounds. In Ayurvedic medicine the poultice made from the stems and the roots is applied externally against skin irritation. Also, the herbal extract improves kidney and urinary tract function, helps to maintain body weight and a good oral hygiene, as well it is used against eye problems (cataracts, conjunctivitis). Finally, the plant juice is highly nutritious due to its high content in vitamins and minerals |
