Features Description Beta vulgaris is an annual or biennial plant growing up to 1,5m, with heart-shaped, green, large, shiny, hard, linear leaves, white, pale yellow or red stems, small, hermaphrodite, green or red flowers and underground, red, edible bulbs. The planting takes place from July to August and from February to April, while the harvesting happens 2,5 to 5 months after sowing.
Method Administration The plant is administered in the form of herbal tea (1-2 spoons of dried herb in a cup of boiled water for 5-10min, 3 times a day). The plant may also be consumed as fresh salads.Warning: The use of herb preparations is not recommended without seeking advice from your physician or pharmacist. The substances they contain may interact with the subscribed drugs that the patient already takes, thus eliminating their therapeutic efficacy or inducing toxicity. They may also burden further weakened vital functions of the body thus exposing the patient to increased morbidity and life threatened conditions.
Pharmacological Info The plant has antihypertensive, antioxidant, tonic and laxative properties. It also has antihypertensive action, which is attributed to the nitrite contained in the root, and prevents cardiac ischemia by inhibiting platelet aggregation. It has a particular antioxidant action, which is attributed to peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase (enzymes) and betanin (antioxidant). This action combined with an increase in white blood cells, helps to remove the abnormal cancer cells, especially of stomach, protecting this organ from cell damage, in cases of alcohol overconsumption, obesity, lack of proteins, diabetes and other factors. The herbal tea is used as purgative and emmenagogue, as well against hemorrhoids. In folk medicine it is recommended against anemia, jaundice, toothache, tinnitus, dandruff, headache and vertigo.
